ISBN .. where did it come from?

Yeah .. we all know it’s a standard numbering system for books, giving each book a unique machine readable ID (and people who did computer science probably know that the final digit is a mod 11 checksum digit), but did you know it’s only 35 years old and was originally started by WH Smith?
