Paypal kicks off mobile payments

Was surprised by an email from Paypal this morning
introducing me to their PayPal
Mobile
service which allows PayPal users to send payments through their phones,
either by SMS or by Voice. You essentially send funds to another mobile number, which
is presumably signed up to the same service.

It seems like they’re already gearing up to target the retailer market as they offer
the convenience of being able to buy something straight off an ad. Whenever a PayPal
Mobile sees a “Text To Buy” option on a poster, magazine or event, they can purchase
said item using PayPal Mobile, which handles the source of funds from your PayPal
account, and presumably also uses your PayPal shipping address to dispatch the item
straight to you.

If you think about what does for the marketeer, it is truly astounding. In the past,
it was difficult to attribute someone’s behaviour directly to the medium that has
affected the behaviour. If you see an ad in a magazine, you couldn’t just run out
and buy it; now you can. If you’re walking in the street and see a billboard promoting
a concert, you can buy a ticket for the concert within 30 seconds of seeing the advertisement.
How’s that for tapping into impulse behaviour!!!!
