And it ranges from guys who play every now and again, all the way to people who would spend the whole day playing if they got the opportunity. They’ve played at home, they’ve played online, they’ve played in single games, they’ve played in poker tournaments. But the most astounding thing is that I had no idea that poker was so popular.

So I did some reading up about poker and picked up some interesting facts about poker. Here are some:

  • No one really knows the origin of the game. There are elements that go as far back at the 15th century, while other developments are as recent as 1970.
  • On a deck of cards, the king of spades represents David, King of Israel; the king of Clubs represents Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia; the king of Hearts is Charlemagne, King of France; and the king of Diamonds is Caesar Augustus, Emperor of Rome.
  • Popular belief holds that a standard deck of playing cards represent significant religious and metaphysical meaning. The 53 cards in the deck represents the 52 weeks of the year, the 4 suits represent the seasons of fall, winter, spring and summer, the 13 cards per suit represent the 13 phases of the lunar cycle, and if you add up all of the cards in the playing deck you get 364 days of the year… then you add a joker for a total of 365 days.
  • Ex-President Richard Nixon won $6000 during his first two months in the U.S. Navy in World War II, playing poker. His winnings were used to fund his first (and successful) campaign for congress.

I just saw a question on Twitter from @TheAmanda asking if she was the only one who knew the difference between Vulcans and Romulans. I responded straight away with a tweet letting her know I knew the difference too. Vulcans are trained to wipe any emotion out of their lives, while Romulans are highly emotional. They’re actually two species on the seminal science fiction series called Star Trek which I watched fervently many many moons ago. It’s amazing how facts like that can stick in your mind sometimes and that’s basis of trivia: those snippets of information about something totally random that can spring to mind as soon as someone asks the question.

Logo_and_boodleIf you’re a fan of trivia there are quite a few places online where you can learn more and more pieces of trivia and other places where you can compete with others in exciting trivia games. One such place is Triviala.com where you can take part in free trivia quizes and even compete with others for weekly cash prizes. That’s not the end of it though, if you get bored of the multitude of trivia quizes there are on the site; you can go ahead and create your own quizes, then invite your friends to come and take part in them. The site is based around it’s own monetary currency they call Crowns. You can earn Crowns by winning quizes or performing tasks like uploading an avatar photo etc. Once you amass your Crowns you can use them to compete for monetary prizes; the more Crowns you have, the more chances you get to win.

It’s a great site if you’re looking for a way to spend your time and if you feel your trivia is up to scratch. One to bookmark I think.

I came across the Aviva Trivia Blog and had a few laughs. Aviva is actually a search directory but the trivia blog is really aimed at the lighter side. There’s lots of fun facts about everything you can think about. Here are some facts I learnt today:

  • When you cough, air rushes out of your windpipe faster than the speed of sound.
  • Jukeboxes were originally called “Automatic Coin-Operated Phonographs”
  • You can actually get a job as a “Chicken Sexer”, “Eye bank procurer” or “Fish Liver Sorter”
  • Most people can outrun a killer bee
  • Napalm was invented in 674 by a Syrian architect

But my favourite section is the one titled “Useless Facts about Shaving” which includes the following gems like the fact that an average trim shaves between 20,000-25,000 hairs from a man?s face.

Anyway, go check it out. One thing I can say: I’m certainly ready for my next round of Trivia Pursuit! Great way to end the day huh ?
