Looks like Third Thursday is upon us once again! For those who have never come across it, it’s an opportunity for people interested in Social Media to get together, have a bite to eat and share thoughts and ideas about established and emerging Social Networking websites, capabilities and services.

It’s usually a pretty varied group around the table and conversations range from benefits and risks of Social Media, all the way to designing efficient algorithms for minifying Javascript. Yes, there are geeks among us, but there are also those who just want to learn more about Facebook, Twitter and Youtube and how they can be used in their daily or professional lives.

So please come and join us. It’s an open invitation, anyone can come and if you’re a regular try and bring along a friend too. This month will be slightly different as Glen from YourWebVideo will be hunting around for people’s opinions on the use of video online and we’ll get a chance to watch him in action. It’s bound to be fun!

As usual, we’ll be down at Paparazzi in Douglas at 12:30. There’s all the Wifi you can eat and we’ll grab some food while we’re there too. See you on the 19th!

Hey everyone. It’s the Third Thursday of the month again this week and as always, the Isle of Man Social Media Club is having it’s lunchtime meet up. Come and share your latest stories, learn about Social Media and find out what’s hot and what’s not. Come and meet your online friends and put names to faces. Come and tell us all about what you think about Google+. I’m sure these and other topics will all make the table this month.

I’m actually off-island for this one, so your host will be none other than @programx (who I’m sure you all know). He’s come to pretty much everyone of these lunches, so I’m sure you’re in capable hands.

So, where’s it being held? Our venue is Paparazzi Restaurant in Douglas, at 12:30 on Thursday 21st July. It’s an open event and everyone is welcome.

Social Media Day – 30th June – Isle of Man!!

Did you know that June 30th is Social Media Day? It’s organised by Mashable, one of the prermier site for all things Social, and they describe it as:

A day to celebrate the revolution of media becoming social. Celebrate Social Media Day with Mashable by attending or organising a meetup near you on June 30. Connect with your Social Media Community!

So, a couple of days ago I checked if anything was happening in the Isle of Man, and it turns out nothing had been organised yet. So I had a few words with @ProgramX and now we don’t have just a Social Media event .. we actually have TWO Social Media Events you can come to.

First of all we have a Social Media lunch. Same format as Social Media Club, down at Paparazzi at 12:30. It’s open to anyone with an interest in Social Media and a great opportunity for friends and colleague to mingle over a bite.

Next we’ve book a table at Danny’s Bar (Peveril Buildings, opposite Sea Terminal) for starting 6-6.30ish (ie. after work to catch people before they leave Douglas). Following food in Danny’s bar, we’ll move on to G+D’s for those that want to continue the evening with some dancing.

There are two events to try and attract as much interest as possible. If you’re office based and can only do lunch, come to that. If you’re out of town and can only make dinner, come to that. If you don’t have any commitments and can come to both, please do; you’re bound to meet a different crowd!

So, book the 30th June in your calendar and come socialise with your Social Media friends! Drop us a line if you’re coming.

Third Thursday is upon us, and as you may already know, Third Thursday is Social Media Thursday. And this month Thursday is going to be even more fun than ever. Here are the reasons why:

Social Media Club lunch is on. It’s an informal lunch for people interested in Social Media. You may use it for work, for personal reasons or to promote your hobby, but if you’re interested in how to use Social Media, and are looking to network with your online friends and acquaintances, come and join us for lunch at Paprazzi at 12:30. Anyone can come, and bring your friends along
We have a local celebrity visiting us for lunch. Famous tweeter @zoegillings (I believe she’s also known for her snowboarding prowess) is coming to lunch! We don’t have anything formal organised, it’s just a friendly chat over lunch, but it’s a great opportunity to meet her and hear all about what she’s up to.
And if lunch isn’t enough for you, local podcaster and social media whiz Derek Richardson is the CMI’s speaker in the evening. They’re holding an event titled: Social Media – Captivating the Digital Domain and it’s open to anyone to attend.

There you have is, Social Media Thursday in a nutshell. So, who’s for lunch? See you at Paparazzi on Thursday 21st April at 12:30!

Unlock the benefits of Social Media – Slides from event

I gave a presentation to the local Forward Ladies Chapter yesterday entitled: Unlocking the Benefits of Social Media. Here are the slides for those who attended and others who may be interested in the material:

It’s the first time I’ve use SlideRocket and I’m pretty impressed at it’s presentation capabilities. I particularly love the Flickr integration which enabled me to add some great imagery to the presentation. I guess the only trepidation I had was that it’s a cloud-based solution, which meant that if my Internet connection died I would have been in trouble, but increasingly that’s starting to feel like a smaller and smaller risk.

Happy to accept any feedback on the material in the presentation or the presentation itself.

Third Thursday – 20/1/2011 – Isle of Man Social Media Club #smc

January seems to be flying by and it’s that time of the month again; when Third Thursday is upon us and it’s time for the Manx Social Media Club to meet up for lunch. We always meet in the same place; Paparazzi in Douglas, so you should all be familiar with it, but I’d like to stress that lunch is open to everyone with an interest in Social Media. New faces are always welcome.

This month we have lots to talk about, the upcoming Twestival, some members are bringing tablets along to show off, whether Twitter needs filtering or not, whether Foursquare is declining in popularity and of course, the obligatory OS debates. The agenda is always open, so feel free to bring any questions, peeves and successes you want to hear. We’re particularly interested in where you’re using Social Media and the impact on your organisation and yourself.

So, if you’re interested in Social Media, come meet us at Paparazzi at 12:30 on Thursday 20th January. We’re usually the big table in the top right corner.

Social Media and Competitive Advantage

I gave a talk to the JCC recently here in the Isle of Man about Social Media and it’s impact on Competitive Advantage. It was an interesting talk, and the main thing that came out of it is how different industries are in different stages of maturity, therefore any advice needed to be tailored for that particular organisation.

The 10 stages of Social Media Integration in Business

It’s funny how sometimes something sticks in your head as an action or placeholder for something you want to do. Well, a few months ago I had heard my friend Sherrilynne talk about a set of stages that organisations go through in their jounrey to adopting Social Media. I ended up digging around and found her source, a most excellent post by Brian Solis called The 10 Stages of Social Media Integration in Business.

In a nutshell, the 10 stages are:

Stage 1: Observe and Report
Stage 2: Setting the Stage
Stage 3: Socialising Media
Stage 4: Finding a Voice and a Sense of Purpose
Stage 5: Putting Words into Action
Stage 6: Humanizing the Brand and Defining the Experience
Stage 7: Community
Stage 8: Social Darwinism
Stage 9: The Socialization of Business Process
Stage 10: Business Performance Metrics

It’s a thought provoking piece, and if you read nothing else today, read THIS. And I mean really read it; don’t skim through it, savour every word and ponder on its significance. It will give you a deeper understanding of the journey we’re all heading through.

It’s that time of the month again, yes, Third Thursday is here and it’s time for the Isle of Man Social Media Club to get together to catch up. In case you’ve never come before, this is an informal gathering for people interested in Social Media. If you’re have a passing interest in Social Media, if you make a living from Social Networks, if you’re interested in learning how you could apply it in your daily work or personal life; please come and join us, meet some other enthusiasts and share your stories. It’s an opportunity to share any lessons learnt, hear about new technologies and pick up new hints and tips to try online.

We tend to talk about Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, FourSquare, Buzz and whatever new networks are on the horizon. It’s at our usual venue: Paparazzi at 12:30 on Thursday 15th July. Come along … and bring a friend.
