Here’s an interesting website for people looking to more to or from new York. It’s a website called City Move that aims to put people planning to make a move in touch with New York Movers and helps them get the best deal possible for their move. It’s all based around a reverse-auction process which is really quite interesting. Here’s how it works:

Let’s say you’re planning to move to New York and are looking for the cheapest moving company to help you out. You sign up to the website and fill in the details of the company you’re looking for. It’s a pretty simple process where you specify details of your move including:

Your source and destination address

The number, size and shapes of boxes and large items like furniture you want moving

You have the option of specifying what kind of vehicle and how many people you want, if you wish; or you can just let the mover decide.

Whether you want a total cost or an hourly cost

Once you’ve given all your details, the system works its magic and gets in touch with a number of movers who can help. These will provide quotes for their services which you can use, together with reviews other customers have left, to choose the company you would like to help you out.

Compare this to the traditional process you would follow; opening the yellow pages, get a list of likely companies, phone each one and explain your requirements and wait for a price from each one. Instead here, you type in your requirements once, and the companies bid against each other to provide you with the best price. I know which one I would choose if I needed this sort of service.

If you want to learn more, check out the video below:

I’ve been looking through Web Hosting Geeks; a website that tries to put together the best web hosting reviews you can find on the web. The top 5 on the list seem to be:

Inmotion

BlueHost

WebHostingPad

HostMonster

JustHost

I do know a couple of them, but I was surprised with the rest as I don’t recognise the names. Looking through these reviews is always a good opportunity to catch up on which companies are making a name for themselves in the industry and to find out what new companies are making a play for a position.

The website also has another couple of interesting sections including a number of articles that explain the ins and outs of web hosting, the different options that are available and what to look for when you come to choosing the right host. The main thing to keep in mind is that particular web hosts tend to focus on certain features at the expense of others (usually cost vs features vs support) and it’s important to know what features you’re after and what sort of cost you’re ready to pay for. For example, BlueHost is particuarly cheap; however there tends to be resource constraints if you try to put too many busy sites on it.

Check it out. Pretty interesting.

One thing I haven’t quite perfected at home is how I watch video I’ve downloaded off the web. Don’t get me wrong, every year I end up with a better and better solution but I’m still not where I want to be. At the moment I use bitTorrent to download videos, then burn them to a rewritable DVD and play them in my DVD player (which plays DivX and other formats). A step in the right direction would be getting something like a networked media player; one of whichI saw on Gadget Advisor. The one I saw reviewed was the DIVCo TViX M-6500A which effectively allows your TV to play videos directly off your network, off a USB device or off its internal hard disk. This would allow me to play videos directly off my computer after having downloaded them. Just perfect.

I’ve only come across Gadget Advisor recently but it seems to have a growing collection of reviews and news about hardware, software and all sorts of gadgetry. So if you’re after that perfect universal remote or looking for some way to backup online; then pop down and have a look. You’ll be sure to find what you’re looking for.

Do you check out reviews before you buy anything? You should; it’s so easy online to search for a review and get an indication of how good/bad the product you’re after is. I’m not saying you should trust anything you read on the web implicitly. However, someone who’s had a decidedly positive or negative experience will be quite ready to express their opinion and these reviews are a great way to gauge public perception of the item you’re after.

One place you can find reviews is called Test Freaks. There are reviews for every product out there, whether you’re after cell phone reviews, Camcorders or TVs you can find a review about the item you’re looking for. The website is still in production but there’s already loads and loads of reviews. Check them out!

Things change. That’s a pretty well-accepted fact of life. And nothing is quite a fluid as the money markets. Things like exchange rates, interest rates, discount rates and mortgage rates don’t just change from time to time, they change all the time. So it’s always a good idea to keep an eye on them and at regular intervals, say once a year, review your position and make any corrections you need to.

I tend to apply this yearly principle to mortgage rates in particular. There are a huge variety of rates around, from fixed rates to variable rates, from interest repayment mortgages to fixed capital repayment mortgages and new products are being developed every day. There’s also a pretty competitive market out there with a number of institutions vying for your custom.

Morale of the story, don’t just sit on a mortgage. If you’ve had it for longer than a year, then re-evaluate your position and make sure you have the best deal on the market.

My immediate impression is that the blog looks really spiffy. I like the colour selection and the way the whole thing hangs together.

There’s some touches to the site that stand out as being particulaly cool. I like the random quote that appears at the top of every page and the really cool “Share This” button which switches to a page where you can select a whole bunch of social networks you can share the link with. And the live Search is a really cool plugin too.
