Do you remember your first mobile phone? I bet it’s sitting at the bottom of a drawer somewhere, covered in dust. Did you know that there are companies out there that will give you good money for those phones? Most phones can be recycled, whether they’re used for parts and repairs, or sold to other countries to help people who would not normally be able to afford a new phone.

This is where Sell My Mobile, a website that lets you join the mobile phone recycling game. The great thing about the website is that all you need to do is key in your mobile phone details and the website will search across a number of different providers who will be ready to buy your phone. There are quite a few companies in the list, including some big companies like Boots Recycle, Cashinmyfone, Earth Mobile and Envirofone.

I checked my old phone on it, an XDA Orbit. CashInMyFone would give me $25 for it if I sent it in. I can also send it to other companies, but they’re all less than $25, so if I had to sell it, that’s the place I would sell it to. It’s a great site that means you dont have to go and visit each one of the other sites to find which one offers the best deal. Check it out!

Here’s an interesting new money making scheme I came across. It’s a website called My Search Funds which, in a nutshell, lets you earn a residual income every time you search the Web. Does it sound too good to be true? Well, according to My Search Funds, it’s completely above board and totally transparent. So, the question is, where does the money come from?

Well, here’s how it works. Search Engines earn an advertising revenue for putting sponsored links on the search results page whenever you search. Each search engine has it’s own technique for doing this and it’s one of their major sources of revenue. Now, it order to encourage traffic to their searches, search engines tend to share some of their advertising revenues with whoever sends them search traffic. So, for example, if you use the search box in Firefox to search Google and click on a sponsored link, Google will effectively pop some money in Firefox’s account to say thanks for the traffic. Another example is the search box in the top right hand corner of this site. If you “search the web” and click on a sponsored link, I make a few pennies.

This is the revenue that My Search Funds taps into, and what they do is give you 50% of the income that’s generated whenever you search the Web. Now, I haven’t really studied the Terms of Service of the relevant search engines, so ‘m not sure whether this is really OK with them, but as long as I’m getting my search results, the worst that can happen is that I don’t make anything from searching. The user experience is also seamless, thanks to the fact that the search facility integrates directly as a custom search engine in FireFox and Internet Explorer 7. You won’t even know you’re using it.

Oh, another point is that if you refer anyone, you get 10% of their search revenue and 1% of the revenue from the people they refer. There’s nothing to lose and so far, I’ve made 69p. Anyone out there want to give it a try? (That’s my referral link, in case you were wondering) Just click here

I came across an interesting report today that’s an IT Salary Survey for 2008. It’s a survey conducted by Global Knowledge, a global leader in IT and business training together with TechRepublic, an online magazine and social network for IT professionals. The report comes up with some great facts and figures that are based around the U.S. IT industry particularly around salaries and skills.

Did you know for example that nearly half of those responding earn a salary between $45,000 and $85,000 per year in nearly equal groups. Here’s a chart of how salaries are split into bands showing the ranges of all the respondents to the survey placed themselves in:

My favourite sections are the ones that are relevant to a global market, particularly the parts outlining Top Tech skills that employers are looking for, and Top Certifications that actually mean something. But don’t just take my word for it, read it for yourself

Like most of the people in the UK (apparently) I owe lots of money to the bank. Not that I borrow money on a regular basis or that I overdraw my credit cards, but rather I had borrowed hundreds of thousands of pounds a few years ago so I could buy a house. Which basically means I’ll be spending most of my working life paying it back. Anyway, so like everyone else who’s in debt, I keep an ear out for what the Bank of England Base Rate is doing and always feel better when I hear it’s going down!

Well, according to some experts, the Base Rate may drop as low as 4%. And that’s pretty good news for anyone who has borrowed money. Basically, a 0.25 percentage point rise, for example, would push down monthly repayments on a £150,000 interest-only loan down by £31.25 – or £375 a year. So you can see how a drop of 1.5% can be really helpful to anyone who has borrowed money (or is looking to borrow money). Basically, if you’re planning on borrowing money for Mortgages or Secured Loans, then the lower the interest rate; the better.

A drop in interest rates isn’t good for everyone of course. Besides mortgage rates dropping it also means that savings rates drop. This means that people who are cash positive and have money in the bank will be getting less interest on the amount. But, I guess, some people win and some others lose.

What about you? Do you have owe more money on your mortgage .. or are you cash positive and are living off the interest on your earnings?

It seems that there are more and more comparison sites springing up on the Net. It’s a great medium for that sort of business, as one can now automate comparison across different services as more and more companies push their offerings online and provide APIs to them. I came across Money Magic today while looking up some mortgage information and I wanted to bookmark them for the future. They offer all sorts of information about mortgages, lenders and guides to different products. They can also come up with a number of quotes from different companies and this service is free.

One thing I learnt today is that there are instruments called 125% Mortgages. These are usually made up of a 95% mortgage on property together with a 30% unsecured loan. This is particularly useful for people who have trouble getting a deposit together, or if you’re planning to do some work on the property after you buy it. Must keep that in mind next time we’re looking at property!

That reminds me. I need to get in touch with my mortgage company. They offered me a better rate a few months ago, but it doesn’t seem to have kicked in!

Ask any economics student and they will tell you all about how money is created by banks and lending systems and what it does to our economy. However, the creators of online games and virtual worlds have also been instrumental in creating virtual money. From Linden dollars (that’s the currency used in Second Life) to World of Warcraft (WoW) gold, different virtual societies are driven by this virtual currency and interestingly end up with their own economic systems that model real-life economics really well.

Second Life uses a model that mimics real life, however, there are a number of MMORPGs (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) that use virtual money as reward and as a way to advance in the game. This has given rise to a massive industry in virtual goods and services that is predicted to hit $4 billion in 2008.

This has given rise to a wealth of possibilities for individuals and businesses working in these economies and reaping real world benefits. From people who develop and sell property in Second Life to companies who sell and buy WoW gold, there are hundreds of opportunities out there for people to tap into. All it takes is a spark of ingenuity and the drive to follow through with your ideas.

I remember reading an article about this in Time or one of the other magazines you find on the newstands. Does anyone remember which one it was?

Ever since the heady days that Wolfenstein 3D graced our screens, First Person Shooters (FPSs) have gone from strength to strength; taking the genre to new heights. Today I read about an interesting development that may take it down an interesting avenue, adding renumeration to the game.

Kwari is the name of the game and here’s the blurb:

Kwari is a free-to-download FPS in which players put their money where their skills are by agreeing on a “per hit” rate of one penny to one dollar. Every time you score a hit, that amount of cash is taken from your opponent’s account and put in yours, with the reverse happening when you’re hit yourself.

That comes from Wired which is where I read about the story thanks to a mate on ManxForums who pointed it out. I’ve signed up for the beta; will let you know what it’s like once i get my hands on the game.

Remember the days when everyone got the same deal at the bank? Remember when websites looked the same to everyone? Well, the more time goes by, the more personalisation and segmentation kick into play and we all start getting different deals, different conditions and different offers. Retailers and marketers get a good deal because they can focus on a narrow segment and maximise their impact and profit. However the great thing is that consumers get a good deal too, as their needs are more closely met and services get tailored specifically for them.

Take credit cards for example. Gone are the days where you bank gave you a card as part of their service and that was the only option open to you. Instead there are a myriad of credit cards around, offering all sorts of incentives like lower interest rates, loyalty points, cashback and a host of other features. Luckily there are websites like CreditCardApplications around that can help you navigate through all these and pick out the best deal that is tailored to what you like and what you don’t. Instead of having to check out each of the credit card suppliers one by one, CreditCardApplications walks you through a series of options (well 2 steps really) to cut out the card providers who don’t match your requirements, then shows you a tabulated list of results with the pertinent features of each one so you can make your selection. It works well and delivers exactly what it promises.

One thing is certain, the days of mass marketing are well and truly over. The trick nowadays is to pinpoint a segment that you can focus on and devout your time and effort to finding out exactly what that niche is after. The secret is finding a niche small enough to become an expert in, yet large enough to make it financially viable.
