Downloading new Microsoft software

There’s been a new “wave” of beta software coming out from Microsoft today. According to Liveside you can download the new set of Live applications (called Wave 3) which include:

Messenger v9
Windows Live Movie Maker (this looks cool)
Mail with Calendar synchronisation
Writer
Photo Gallery
Family Safety
Outlook Connector

I’ve played with most of those, except Family Safety which is not a free application. I’m off to download now and have a play with the new stuff.

Grab something to watch with Graboid

Here’s a service I’m just about to try. Graboid Video is an application that lets you stream video straight off Usenet servers all over the world. There’s a huge collection of videos, TV shows and anything you want to watch. As the video is downloaded off Usenet, it’s supposed to be the fastest download around boasting the ability to download a 2 hour move in 30 minutes, though I’ll believe that when I see it.

I haven’t tried it yet, so I don’t know what material is available, but it will be interesting to see what programming is available and how they handle the legal aspect of any copyrighted material. I would guess that this app is simply downloading material available on Usenet and any legal issues would need to be dealt with by them.

The brilliant thing about Graboid Video is that it’s free to download and free to us up to an allocation of 2Gb a month. If you want to download more than that there’s a fee to pay. I haven’t managed to find out what the fee is, but as soon as I know, and I have some feedback on the service, I’ll post it here. In the meantime check it out for yourself. I’m off to try it myself.

I keep getting asked by friends and colleagues how to download WMV files. You see, some corporate networks have streaming media blocked but sometimes there’s a legitimate reason why a user needs to have access to this sort of thing. So, I download the file on my home machine and bring it home.

The software I use is a little app called GetASFStream. Now, most places you can find this are websites written in Asian characters so it’s quite hard to get your hands on. So I thought I’d host a mirror of the application here:

Orcas CTP

I found a post on Andy’s blog which talks about the latest iteration of Visual Studio (Orcas) being available for download as a Community Tech Preview (CTP). It ships as a VPC image, is 4Gb in size and you can get it here.

If you’re looking for some new technology to play with, check it out. There’s all the C# 3.0 bits, LINQ, support for Office 2007, Event tracing for Vista and a whole bunch of new stuff. Enjoy!
