Playing with Scoutle
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 10th May, 2008
I came across a really interesting website called Scoutle today. It’s an interesting social network facility for bloggers and websites which promises to link you up with other sites that are similar in interest and content. It uses a ranking algorithm to let your “scout” run around the web and be matched up with other [...]
Web 2.0 for lunch
Posted by: Owen on Monday, 10th Mar, 2008
I went to listen to Sherrilynne give a seminar on Web 2.0 and Social Media at the International Business School over lunch. It was a great event where she covered quite a lot of ground. I always enjoy listening to Sherrilynne speak, because, although I have experiences similar to what she describes, she always comes [...]
Do you Twitter? What is it, you say?
Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 6th Mar, 2008
I came across a brilliant video clip that explains what Twitter is in plain English:
I love the simplicity of the video, especially as it has been particularly tricky explaining to people just why I’ve found Twitter so useful. The video is a starting point really, and doesn’t go into why Twitter has such a lasting [...]
WordPress turning social ..
Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 5th Mar, 2008
It was only yesterday that Hyder mentioned BuddyPress to me, which is a set of plugins that turns Wordpress into a fully fledged social networking website. Today, I’ve just read that Andy Peatling, the person behind BuddyPress has just joined Automattic, the company behind Wordpress, WordPress MU, bbPress and Akismet. It signals that WordPress will probably have [...]
Research into social networks
Posted by: Owen on Sunday, 2nd Dec, 2007
Here’s something that I need to put on my reading list. (I have my Project Management exam next Thursday so won’t read it just yet). faberNovel Consulting has just issued a Research Paper on best practices from leading social network websites, which covers MySpace, FaceBook, LinkedIn and all the other usual suspects. Here’s some blurb [...]
Facebook ups the ante
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 13th Nov, 2007
Here’s something interesting that I must have missed. Facebook has a system where users can create pages for products, companies, artists or anything else they wish. Each of these “pages” has a profile, and associated details, events, pictures, movies, reviews, discussions .. and best of all fans. Once a product page is created, people can [...]
Facebook as a productivity tool
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 30th Oct, 2007
I came across a great post today, Deanna down at StrivePR was talking about how FaceBook has become part of her working life in her post: FaceBook as a sausage-on-a-stick. I’ll quote part of her post:
Whilst many companies may be blocking it or fawning about its use within their workplace, I am becoming increasingly [...]
I’m on Pownce
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 7th Aug, 2007
Just when you thought Facebook has taken over the world, in comes another social network to steal it’s thunder. I signed up with Pownce today and here’s my Pownce page. I haven’t really given it a chance yet, but it seems much more limited that anything Facebook brings to the table. But then, the power [...]
Blogging: Conversations with strangers?
Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 1st Aug, 2007
I was trying to add Sam Gentile to my FaceBook friends list this morning and he declined on the basis that he didn’t know me. And rightfully so; we’ve never met, he’s never seen me, he’s never even heard my name before. But I feel I know him. I’ve been reading his blog for the [...]
Love FaceBook? What about your privacy?
Posted by: Owen on Sunday, 22nd Jul, 2007
My friend Legal Andrew has just put together a brilliant post after taking some time to study FaceBook’s Terms of Service. He maintains that your data on FaceBook isn’t private and also points out a number of terms that everyone should be aware of when contributing to their website.
For me however, I believe that living [...]
Innovation driving Innovation
Posted by: Owen on Monday, 25th Jun, 2007
Don’t you just love the way how innovation and market development go hand in hand? One person comes up with a widget, someone else will copy it and make some improvements, someone else will come up with a brand new way to use it, but nevertheless the widget keeps getting improved and proves more value [...]
Are you on FaceBook?
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 16th Jun, 2007
I’m starting to get hooked on FaceBook. I’m away on holiday at the moment, and I keep wanting to log in to see what’s happened. I’ve just got myself an internet connection and I want to go there now, but I thought I’d pop something into my blog first.
The funny thing is that this isn’t [...]
A Cautionary Tale
Posted by: Owen on Monday, 12th Mar, 2007
Following an article that Sherrilynne Starkie wrote in the local paper: Tech Talk: A cautionary tale (great article by the way, some poignant anecdotes in there), a thread was sparked off on one of the local forums starting off a discussion as to whether forums posts affect local businesses
This was my take:
I don’t think it’s [...]
Rise of the social networks
Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 28th Feb, 2007
Are you a member of a social network? These sites are designed to put you in touch with people with similar likes and dislikes. There are a number around, including MySpace, FaceBook, Orkut and LinkedIn. But there’s also one that was built here in the UK.
PPLParty was started by Callum Brannan when he was 17. [...]
Social Bookmark Meta-Search
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 17th Feb, 2007
I came across a search engine today that is focused on searching the Social Bookmark sites (like Digg, Reddit and a bunch of others). There’s 53 websites in the search and the results are provided thanks to Google Co-op. You can also get a FireFox search engine to add directly to your browser. Check it [...]
