Giving up on FF3b5

Posted by: Owen on Friday, 9th May, 2008

What a shame! I’ve tried switching back to using FireFox 3 Beta 5, but I just can’t get it to keep running on my Vista laptop. It runs for a bit, crashes, then Windows reports a Data Execution Prevention issue with it. This morning I just get getting DEP errors every time I ran [...]

New Look on StrivePR

Posted by: Owen on Monday, 31st Mar, 2008

Spent some time over the weekend playing with Strive Notes, the blog a friend of mine uses for her PR firm. It was my first installation of the finished version WordPress 2.5 and I was pretty impressed at how smoothly it all went. The blog upgrade was flawless, took around 20 seconds and everything just [...]

Paul, from my office, has just sent me a link to a post by Tim Sneath entitled What does Vista SP1 mean to developers. In his post, Tim outlines some major changes in SP1 that developers need to know about. In a nutshell, his post talks about:

A common codebase for ALL Vista and Windows 2008 [...]

Greetings, Photoshop Express

Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 27th Mar, 2008

You might have heard that Adobe has launched an online photo editing and sharing suite called Photo Express. It’s still in beta, and when you sign up the only country in the drop-down list is US, but there’s nothing really stopping anyone else from trying it out. It’s a Flash based application with 2Gb storage [...]

Import to Elgg

Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 19th Mar, 2008

I’ve been playing a bit with Elgg, an open source social networking platform and one of it’s cool features is the ability to automatically syndicate content from a different blog. Here’s how to do it:

go to your profile
click on Your Resources in the menu bar
click on Feeds (right under the page title)
add the address [...]

WordPress v2.5 Sneak Peak

Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 18th Mar, 2008

I’ve noticed that WordPress v2.5 has gone to RC1 and is available as for sneak preview. It’s a bit later than originally planned but I can understand how the development team are being a bit more cautious about this one as it’s a pretty fundamental change to parts of WordPress, particularly the admin backend. Here’s [...]

Here’s a service I’m just about to try. Graboid Video is an application that lets you stream video straight off Usenet servers all over the world. There’s a huge collection of videos, TV shows and anything you want to watch. As the video is downloaded off Usenet, it’s supposed to be the fastest download around [...]

Now on Firefox v3

Posted by: Owen on Sunday, 17th Feb, 2008

So, I’ve done the deed and installed Firefox v3 beta 3.  It seems pretty stable, haven’t had any issues in the 5 minutes I’ve been running it, and I’m loving all the new functionality. I love the location bar (see left) and particularly like the Page Info dialog box; that shows you a whole bunch [...]

FireFox v3

Posted by: Owen on Sunday, 17th Feb, 2008

Just in case you haven’t noticed, Firefox Version 3 has hit its Beta 3 release, which is a pretty important milestone for them. It’s the version that gets released to testers around the world. It’s not intended for public consumption, but rather for developers and testers to play with. Now, I’m not too faint-hearted when [...]

Streaming to your Smartphone

Posted by: Owen on Friday, 1st Feb, 2008

I took the day off today as I wasn’t feeling too well, so I’ve been playing with my computer and Smartphone, updating software and playing with new stuff. One of the things I wanted to do was see how I can stream music from my PC down to my phone. One of the utilities I [...]

I picked up some excellent pointers from my hosting provider’s forums by someone who had has been working hard to set up his website: http://evilmidgetsocialclub.com There are some great pointers, so I thought I’d replicate the post here.
For those wondering what Community Server 2007 is … it’s a content management system (CMS) like Joomla, [...]

Download Windows Media files

Posted by: Owen on Friday, 25th Jan, 2008

I keep getting asked by friends and colleagues how to download WMV files. You see, some corporate networks have streaming media blocked but sometimes there’s a legitimate reason why a user needs to have access to this sort of thing. So, I download the file on my home machine and bring it home.
The software I [...]

The Lone Server

Posted by: Owen on Friday, 11th Jan, 2008

Today I came across an interesting viral marketing campaign that Microsoft have embarked on. It’s the story of The Lone Server, which is allegedly the last Windows 2003 server that Microsoft are using now that they have switched all their other servers to Windows 2008.

Oh, and The Lone Server even has a Facebook and LinkedIn [...]
