The Web - The great equaliser
Posted by: Owen on Sunday, 4th May, 2008
I was just thinking about how the Internet is a great way for people to share ideas and in essence generate success for themselves. It’s always a compelling story when you read about people who have managed to conquer adversity and make a name for themselves and the Internet is a great medium for these [...]
The Flaming Tamale has a bad week …
Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 25th Oct, 2006
How has your week been? Well, Flaming Tamale down at PayPerPost has had a few bad
days and to help her destress, her team have made her put up a video confessional
up at the PayPerPost blog. PayPerPost is
a marketplace where advertisers can put up ads and bloggers get paid
to blog; and they are experiencing phenomenal growth. [...]
To all Manx techies out there
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 14th Oct, 2006
Sherrilynne Starkie, the author of Tech Talk in the Isle of Man Examiner is looking for ideas for future installments of the column. It can be about any subject at all, as long as it’s about using computing for business, or the business of computing. If anyone has any gems, you can contact her on [...]
Projection

Hugh
Macleod had a good cartoon up a few days ago.
The interesting thing is that he’s depicting a problem he perceives in Microsoft’s
marketing strategy, but in essence, it’s not an unusual problem.
You tend to get this sort of problem when developers are building an application.
It’s hard to put yourself in the shoes on an uninitiated [...]
10 facts about marketers that programmers might want to know
Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 29th Jun, 2006
Came across an interesting post on Sherrilynne’s blog about differences between techies and marketing folk. Her post directed me to Seth Godin’s post: Seth’s Blog: Ten things programmers might want to know about marketers. A good read if you have a couple of minutes.
Let’s get Rory to Jamaica
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 23rd Jun, 2006
My mate Rory’s getting married tomorrow.
I’ve known Rory for many many years now and he’s a great guy, an extremely prolific
coder and good fun to be with; so I’m looking forward to seeing him (and Karen of
course) tomorrow (Wonder if they’ll bring the cats along …).
Instead of having a wedding list, he’s set up [...]
How should applications evolve?
Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 11th May, 2006
Once an application is released to the outside world, a project gets exposed to requests for changes coming from a whole host of different parties. “Don’t
Give In to Feature Demands” is an interesting article on the sort of feedback
teams get and the bias different groups have when looking at an application. Excellent
read if you’re involved [...]
Should Government consolidate citizen identities across it’s systems?
Posted by: Owen on Wednesday, 10th May, 2006
Interesting approach on the subject of “One Consolidated View of the Citizen” by Richard Allen who outlines the arguments against having a common identifier against citizens in Government databases. The gist of his argument can be found in the last paragraph where he states:
So, to summarise. One common identifier across all government systems means less [...]
eGovernment & eVoting
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 24th Feb, 2006
I had the opportunity to attend a great talk last night. The local
BCS section organised a talk on eGovernment an invited Des
Vincent as speaker for the event. Des gave a very inspiring talk; which had particular
impact to me as I am working in the same field at the moment. Much enjoyed! Thanks BCS!
Use your phone this Valentine Day

Ahhh . … Read this on Wired:
Walking through Tokyo’s Ginza district one Friday evening last month I saw an extraordinary
sight that will soon become an ordinary one: A businessman was talking into his keitai (the
Japanese word for cell phone), holding it out in front of him rather than to his ear.
Suddenly, smiling, he raised the [...]

Rick Segal has an excellent post on how being tech-savvy gives you a head start in life. His story is based around being stuck in an airport, but I’ll let you have a read: Rick

Download and read: God’s Debris
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 18th Nov, 2005
Scott Adams has just put up an electronic version of one of his books: God’s Debris. Here’s why he put
it up:
It’s free because it’s designed to be discussed with people who have also read it. I’m confident that some percentage of the free e-book readers will be inspired to buy a physical book for friends [...]

Scott Adams (the creater of Dilbert) has started blogging. If you can’t get enough Dilbertian humour (one cartoon a day is never enough); check out the blog. There’s more good stuff there.
