Interesting news day
Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 8th May, 2008
It’s funny how some days there’s nothing interesting in the news and some days a whole bunch of different things capture your attention. It’s a bit like playing craps in one of these vegas hotels, you never know what you’re going to get! So, here’s what I found interesting:
Specs of Facebook’s Profile Redesign - interesting [...]

Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 28th Dec, 2006
You might have heard in the latest tech news that PayPerPost
has acquired Performancing. I first met Performancing a few months ago when I
started using their blogging plugin for
Firefox. This enables you to blog straight from your browser and quickly embed
links and extracts from pages you visit.
Performancing has grown since then and now includes tools to [...]

Get off my moonbase
Posted by: Owen on Monday, 11th Dec, 2006
I hope none of you have ever bought a plot on the moon. There’s a number of places
online where you can “buy” an acre of moon terrain:
MoonEstates.com - one acre for £20
ParamountZone - will sell you
an acre for £19.95
So, what do you get for your money. Well, it seems that you get a nice [...]
BitTorrent acquires µTorrent
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 9th Dec, 2006
And in the latest news, BitTorrent has purchased µTorrent for an undisclosed amount.
Apprently the two have a combined userbase of around 135 million, which is not unsubstantial.
For all those who have never used BitTorrent, it’s a protocol for efficiently sharing
large files in P2P fashion, effectively downloading portions of the file from a number
of different people [...]
Last call for Kempton Fireworks tickets
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 31st Oct, 2006
If you live in the London area and were planning to watch fireworks
at Kempton Park this weekend, this is just a warning that online ticket sales
will be closing tomorrow. Keep in mind that advance tickets are cheaper than if you
had to buy tickets at the gate on the night (£5 as opposed to £7.50). [...]
PayPerPost running on VC Juice
Posted by: Owen on Thursday, 12th Oct, 2006
Turns out that PayPerPost had received $3
million in Venture Capital Funding earlier this month. There’s more information about
this on the TechCrunch
blog which includes a podcast where TechCruch and Rob Hof from BusinessWeek speak
to founder Ted Murphy and DFJ’s Josh Stein (one of the Venture Capitalists involved).
It makes very interesting listening especially the insight offered into [...]
Google buys Youtube
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 10th Oct, 2006
The big news today is that Google
has bought YouTube for around 1 billion pounds. YouTube will still maintain it’s
brand, so there’s no chance it will be called GooTube.
Anyway, it looks like the market thinks this is a wise move, as Google
shares went up 2% as the news was announced. The question is, will Google still
offer [...]
Enter GooTube

Looks like there’s talk of Google in possible acquisition talks with YouTube for a
rumoured $1.6 billion. Read all about it here.
Wow, I didn’t realise that YouTube serves more than 100 million videos a day. I wonder
what sort of infrastructure they’re running on !
Free ticket for Digital Life
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 6th Oct, 2006
Has
anyone ever been to DigitalLife? It’s a
massive show in New York which claims to be the ultimate consumer technology, gaming
and entertainment event of the year. I’ve had a look at the website and there some
movie clips of last year’s show and I must say, it looks awesome! With exhibitors like
Microsoft, AMD, Maxim, Skype, NVidia, [...]
EasyMusic
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 6th Oct, 2006
Amidst
my morning junk mail, I found that easyGroup have made a foray into the online music
industry. easyMusic is the latest addition
to their family, allowing you to download tracks with prices starting at 25p per track.
I have’t been using my MP3 player much, but I really should get my iRiver H10 out
of the closet and give [...]
Component Based Development
Posted by: Owen on Friday, 22nd Sep, 2006
The BCS had
an excellent talk last night by Dr
Ben Fairfax of Webcab Components.
He walked us through a number of interested topics regarding the how and why of CBD,
gave us a look at the major platforms on the market and shared some insight into how
his company works in this ecosystem. Basically he has a very interesting
setup where he [...]
Slow down! Who .. me?
Posted by: Owen on Tuesday, 5th Sep, 2006
Looks
like the UK Highways Agency is experimenting with speed warning signs that not only
tell you your speed, but also make it blatently obvious that they know who you are.
A new type of speed warning sign shows your licence plate number as you zoom past.
Good way of driving the point home. A bit more “magic” and [...]
Mobile Phone Throwing Championships
Posted by: Owen on Saturday, 19th Aug, 2006
Did you know that the world record for throwing a mobile phone is 94.97m ? I didn’t; but I’ve just come across the website of the Mobile Phone Throwing UK Championships and it’s packed with interesting info. If you want to try your hand at it, the championship is tomorrow (20th August) at Tooting Bec [...]
No Manx National Speed Limit
Posted by: Owen on Monday, 19th Jun, 2006
Looks like the plans for a National Speed Limit in the IOM have been dumped. Interesting to see the turn-around especially after a heavily
biased consulation to try and force the legislation through
