Rise of the social networks

Are you a member of a social network? These sites are designed to put you in touch with people with similar likes and dislikes. There are a number around, including MySpace, FaceBook, Orkut and LinkedIn. But there’s also one that was built here in the UK.

PPLParty was started by Callum Brannan when he was 17. He started building it when he was at school, but has since continued adding enhancements to the site until it now includes over 400k members, mostly in the UK. They’re due for a major expansion in the next few months, so it’s worth keeping an eye on them and watch their popularity explode.

Is social networking for you? Well, I think it depends mainly on how much time you have on your hands. I did play with some of the sites above, but mostly tend to drift off and do something else. I don’t think age is a major factor; there’s young and old on most of the networks, but time is a definite factor that influences your ability to share and contribute in this way.
